“The cornea transplant was a success,” the doctor said, “so I’m going to slowly take off the bandages to ascertain whether your eyesight has improved.”
The light was unbearably bright at first, but once her eyes had adjusted she could see the crowd waiting intently for her reaction.
“Who are all these people?” she asked, but her doctor’s expression told her the new eyes hadn’t managed to free her of her gift.
