On 18th June I was invited to East London Radio to talk about Dystopic and my upcoming novel These Unnatural Men.
When I was initially approached by Chris Ridgeway, the host of Wheels in Motion, I determined the whole thing to either be a hoax or a grave mistake. Why would anyone want to talk to me about the bleakest fiction imaginable?
I soon realised that this was, as the kids put it, ‘fo realz’, and after an intense wave of nausea I decided I had to go. The chance of embarrassing myself was at such a high level that it couldn’t be comprehended by the human brain, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to discuss totalitarianism, euthanasia and oppression on the wireless (as you can probably tell I’m great fun at dinner parties).
East London Radio is a non for profit station that provides the opportunity for volunteers from all walks of life to gain experience on the air. The content is diverse, original and enthusiastic and helps a wide range of people get a head start in an incredibly competitive industry.
Thankfully the Wheels in Motion show is only an hour long so I didn’t have to speak much. Plied with a cider on an empty stomach I blithered and blathered about dark fiction, the difficulties of writing for a living and the process of creating These Unnatural Men, my sci-fi novel that presents a world in which euthanasia is legal and is a prominent feature of the healthcare industry.
All in all I don’t believe I was too cringey to listen to. I was clearly nervous and unprepared for the whole event, but it was a wonderful experience and I would just like to thank Chris and East London Radio for the opportunity to talk about my dreary interests.
